My 30-year career as a professional artist has involved creating, exhibiting, collaborating, performing and teaching. When I reflect upon what compels me to keep art at the center of my life, the simple answer is, it is my center. I use the spiral as an iconic form both within my work and when describing it. My art begins in an interior place and spirals out to the viewers, inviting them to excavate it to make their own discoveries. My intent is that it resonates for them in both personal and universal ways.

Though my work is non-representational it is both narrative and autobiographical. It is born of and describes my life experiences. It chronicles specific life events and shares a sense of place based on my travels. I accomplish this through pattern, color, form, texture and a mix of materials. I sometimes incorporate written and spoken text, sound and movement. My range of media includes: artists’ books, 2-D prints and paintings, installations, constructions, video and collaborations with dancers and musicians. With roots in printmaking and book arts I employ approaches inherent to those media: thinking in layers, series and sequence. Though experimental and expansive in my mix of materials, I am consistent in my artistic concerns. Through my explorations and resulting work I am interested in providing the viewer the opportunity to make connections and discover their own narratives and iconographies.

My current projects include creating stage sets for a touring group of improvisational dancers and musicians. These installation/ stage sets are currently touring in the US, Europe and Asia.

During a life of art making, I have expanded in my approaches and stayed true to my vision. I am compelled to make art and continue to apply my sensibility to new forms and media. I am interested in the power of art to invite viewers to discover their own stories through an aesthetic experience.
